Academic & research stays

A semester, a fellowship, a sabbatical.

Furnished two-bedroom residences within walking distance of MIT and a short trip from Harvard, leased by the month for visiting faculty, postdocs, researchers and graduate students.

Minimum stay: 32 nights. Every residence is leased by the month. We do not offer nightly, weekend or vacation stays.

Arriving for a term, not a tour

Academic stays have an awkward length: too long for a hotel, too short for a standard twelve-month lease, and usually decided a few weeks before the term starts. Our residences are leased by the month with a 32-night minimum, which makes a single semester, a summer of fieldwork or a full sabbatical year straightforward to arrange.

Each residence is a furnished two-bedroom, two-bath home with a full kitchen, in-unit laundry and dedicated desk space in each bedroom. For a visiting scholar arriving with a partner or family, that is enough room to actually live. For two graduate researchers sharing, it means a private bedroom and bathroom each at a cost well under two separate studios.

There is no furniture to buy, no utility account to open and no internet installation to wait for. Heat, hot water, electricity and Wi-Fi are in the monthly rate, so a visiting appointment that lasts four months does not require setting up a household from scratch.

Walking distance to campus

The Sidney Collection on Sidney Street sits in Cambridgeport, roughly a fifteen-minute walk from MIT's main campus and a short walk from the labs and offices of Kendall Square. Central Square, with its Red Line stop, grocery stores and restaurants, is a few blocks north — from there Harvard Square is two stops in one direction and downtown Boston a handful in the other.

The Charles Collection on Western Avenue in Brighton is close to Harvard's Allston campus and the Charles River path, with more parking and slightly more space. It suits researchers attached to the Allston expansion, or families who would rather trade a walk to MIT for a quieter block and a car.

Practical details for departments and visitors

We can name a department or institution as the responsible party on the lease and invoice monthly, which is often simpler for reimbursement than collecting nightly receipts. We can also hold a lease in an individual's name if that is what your grant requires.

Extensions are handled month to month, subject to availability. If a fellowship is renewed or a term runs long, you ask the same person you have been dealing with all along. The residence is cleaned before you arrive and monthly cleaning is available during longer stays.

Checking a term

Send the month your appointment begins, how long it runs and how many people are coming. We reply within one business day with the residences open for that window and the exact monthly rate.
